About Glutathione

Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide formed from glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It is present in millimolar concentrations in nearly every cell of the body and functions as the principal endogenous thiol antioxidant. Cellular and plasma levels decline with age, chronic stress, and various disease states, and have been the subject of decades of research in redox biology, hepatology, dermatology, and immunology.

Mechanism in Research Literature

Research has documented several roles for glutathione:

  • Direct scavenging of reactive oxygen and reactive nitrogen species
  • Regeneration of other antioxidants including vitamins C and E
  • Substrate for glutathione peroxidase and glutathione transferase enzymes
  • Conjugation with xenobiotics in hepatic Phase II detoxification
  • Modulation of redox-sensitive transcription factors (NF-kB, Nrf2)
  • Inhibition of tyrosinase activity in melanin synthesis research

Research Context

Glutathione has been investigated in studies exploring:

  • Cellular redox biology and oxidative stress
  • Hepatic detoxification pathways
  • Immune cell function and antioxidant defense
  • Skin pigmentation research (tyrosinase inhibition)
  • Aging biology and age-related decline in antioxidant capacity

Related Research Peptides

Glutathione appears in literature alongside other redox- and longevity-related research compounds including NAD+, MOTS-c, SS-31, GHK-Cu, and Thymosin Alpha-1.
